On Friday, 5th December, 2025, the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly joined the rest of the country to celebrate the 41st edition of farmers’ day.
The events which was held at Bokaso durbar grounds was graced by the Chief of Akontombra Traditional Council, Nana Kwabena Ebie II, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Joseph Appiah and the Chief of Bokaso, Nana Kwaku Ennin II.
Also present at the event were, Assembly Members, Heads of Departments, National Security Institutions, Clergy, Political Party Representatives, Distinguished Guest, Farmers, the Media and the General Public.
In his address, the Hon DCE Joseph Appiah applauded the farmers for their handwork under the year of review and encouraged Farmer Based Organisations, Cooperatives and Stakeholders in the sector to collaborate in production and marketing of produce in order to consolidate the FEED GHANA PROGRAMME.
As part of his address to the people on the Feed Ghana Programme, Mr. Appiah stated that the government aims to create employment opportunities in farming, processing, and distribution, promote high-value crops such as fruits and vegetables, expand staple food production of maize, rice, cassava, plantain, and legumes and strengthen welfare systems for farmers by ensuring access to inputs, extension services, health insurance, and pension support.
Sefwi Akontombra proudly aligns with this agenda because agriculture remains the backbone of our District. Currently, seventy-two (72) communities have been sensitised on the programme and Six hundred and four (604) Farmer Based Organisations have been formed and enrolled onto the web-based tracker. I am happy to disclose that, Sefwi Akontombra District is second in terms of number of Farmer Based Organisations formed and enrolled in the Region. He indicated.
Under Feed Ghana, we encourage the formation of oil palm cooperatives, linking farmers to processors and buyers, supporting nurseries and improved seedlings, facilitating community-based milling centers. This sector has the potential to create hundreds of jobs for our youth.
Plantain and cassava are the pride of our District, feeding households and supporting agro-processing industries. Through Feed Ghana, farmers are to benefit from improved suckers and cassava varieties; support for processing gari, fufu flour and cassava flour; and encouragement of value addition to create jobs and reduce post-harvest losses. Our soils are blessed, and plantain and cassava remain our competitive advantage. He added.
The District Chief Executive commended Government and COCOBOD for the Cocoa rehabilitation programmes such as mass spraying and pruning initiatives, hand pollination; fertilizer and seedling support and Fight against swollen-shoot disease. He seized the opportunity to urge everyone to continue to protect the cocoa lands from illegal mining, bushfires, and careless deforestation. Cocoa is our legacy and the future of the District depends on how we sustain it. He entreated.
Hon DCE informed the gathering that four (4) Agricultural Extension Officers visited and supported 3,140 farmers across the District this year. Indicating that their commitment has improved farmer knowledge, productivity, and adoption of modern best practices.
To promote crop diversification and long-term income security, the District distributed 9,680 coconut seedlings to 110 farmers in the District. This initiative will boost future income streams and support agro-support opportunities. He mentioned
He further reported that through the District Veterinary Unit, 14,645 domestic animals, including poultry, goats and sheep were vaccinated and treated contributing to the protection of farmer’s investment and strengthens food security.
As a result of the threat of Fall Armyworms where 615 acres of maize farms, belonging to 672 farmers were affected, the District supplied 96 bottles of Warrior Super pesticide, 24 litres of Adepa and 500 sachets of Nova BC to help farmers combat the infestation and minimize crop loss. Our goal is to make Sefwi Akontombra a hub for quality maize and rice production within the Western North Region. He said.
He ended by calling on all to renew their commitment to supporting the farmers, strengthening the Feed Ghana programme, and advancing the agricultural transformation agenda of the District.
The event themed; “Eat Ghana, Grow Ghana, Secure the Future” saw deserving farmers being awarded for their hard work and contributions toward agricultural development in the district.
In all, sixteen (16) awardees including a Person With Disability (PWD) were awarded in various categories.
