On Friday, 5th December, 2025, the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly joined the rest of the country to celebrate the 41st edition of farmers’ day. The events which was held at Bokaso durbar grounds was graced by the Chief of Akontombra Traditional Council, Nana Kwabena Ebie II, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Joseph Appiah and the Chief of Bokaso, Nana Kwaku Ennin II. Also present at the event were, Assembly Members, Heads of Departments, National Security Institutions, Clergy, Political Party Representatives, Distinguished Guest, Farmers, the Media and the General Public. In his address, the Hon DCE Joseph Appiah applauded the farmers for their handwork under the year of review and encouraged Farmer Based Organisations, Cooperatives and Stakeholders in the sector to collaborate in production and marketing of produce in order to consolidate the FEED GHANA PROGRAMME. As part of his address to the people on the Feed Ghana Programme, Mr. Appiah stated that the government aims to create employment opportunities in farming, processing, and distribution, promote high-value crops such as fruits and vegetables, expand staple food production of maize, rice, cassava, plantain, and legumes and strengthen welfare systems for farmers by ensuring access to inputs, extension services, health insurance, and pension support. Sefwi Akontombra proudly aligns with this agenda because agriculture remains the backbone of our District. Currently, seventy-two (72) communities have been sensitised on the programme and Six hundred and four (604) Farmer Based Organisations have been formed and enrolled onto the web-based tracker. I am happy to disclose that, Sefwi Akontombra District is second in terms of number of Farmer Based Organisations formed and enrolled in the Region. He indicated. Under Feed Ghana, we encourage the formation of oil palm cooperatives, linking farmers to processors and buyers, supporting nurseries and improved seedlings, facilitating community-based milling centers. This sector has the potential to create hundreds of jobs for our youth. Plantain and cassava are the pride of our District, feeding households and supporting agro-processing industries. Through Feed Ghana, farmers are to benefit from improved suckers and cassava varieties; support for processing gari, fufu flour and cassava flour; and encouragement of value addition to create jobs and reduce post-harvest losses. Our soils are blessed, and plantain and cassava remain our competitive advantage. He added. The District Chief Executive commended Government and COCOBOD for the Cocoa rehabilitation programmes such as mass spraying and pruning initiatives, hand pollination; fertilizer and seedling support and Fight against swollen-shoot disease. He seized the opportunity to urge everyone to continue to protect the cocoa lands from illegal mining, bushfires, and careless deforestation. Cocoa is our legacy and the future of the District depends on how we sustain it. He entreated. Hon DCE informed the gathering that four (4) Agricultural Extension Officers visited and supported 3,140 farmers across the District this year. Indicating that their commitment has improved farmer knowledge, productivity, and adoption of modern best practices. To promote crop diversification and long-term income security, the District distributed 9,680 coconut seedlings to 110 farmers in the District. This initiative will boost future income streams and support agro-support opportunities. He mentioned He further reported that through the District Veterinary Unit, 14,645 domestic animals, including poultry, goats and sheep were vaccinated and treated contributing to the protection of farmer’s investment and strengthens food security. As a result of the threat of Fall Armyworms where 615 acres of maize farms, belonging to 672 farmers were affected, the District supplied 96 bottles of Warrior Super pesticide, 24 litres of Adepa and 500 sachets of Nova BC to help farmers combat the infestation and minimize crop loss. Our goal is to make Sefwi Akontombra a hub for quality maize and rice production within the Western North Region. He said. He ended by calling on all to renew their commitment to supporting the farmers, strengthening the Feed Ghana programme, and advancing the agricultural transformation agenda of the District. The event themed; “Eat Ghana, Grow Ghana, Secure the Future” saw deserving farmers being awarded for their hard work and contributions toward agricultural development in the district. Third Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Fifth Assembly
On Friday, 19th December 2025, the Third Ordinary meeting of the Second Session of the Fifth Assembly of the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly was held, where the District Chief Executive, Hon Joseph Appiah, spoke to the Assembly on security, health, education, agriculture, projects, programmes and poverty alleviation. It also centered on revenue performance of the Assembly and some other special events that happened in the district the year under review. On security, Mr. Appiah stated that the District has experienced relatively peaceful and good security atmosphere within period he became the DCE even though there were reports of pockets of theft and criminal activities. The District Security Council (DISEC) of which I am the chairman held successful meetings to address issues concerning illegal mining and other security issues in the district. It is the decision of DISEC to flash out all illegal miners in the district to ensure there is clean water and productive lands for our farmers. He indicated. Speaking on education, the District Chief Executive mentioned that in a collective efforts and attempts to improve the quality of education in the District, the Education Directorate conducted monitoring exercises to ensure that the laid down rule and regulations were followed by teachers, students and Non-teaching staff. The government of his Excellency John Dramani Mahama is committed to his promise of distributing pads to our girls in school to ensure that they manage their periods with dignity and stay in school. I am glad to inform you that our girls have been supplied with the pads when school resumed. He reiterated. The Department of Ghana Education Service in the District has embarked on my First Day at school to ensure that students/pupils come to school and lessons are started as soon as possible. The Assembly supported the Department to undertake this exercise. The Department of Education has started taking passport pictures of students in preparation towards the 2026 BECE examination. The Department is currently working on the School Farms Policy which seeks to create farms in various schools in the District. He emphasized. He acknowledged that there are challenges such as inadequate accommodation for teachers, desk deficits in schools, collapse of school buildings in some communities which needed to be resolved. Commenting on health, he stated that, this government is focused on expanding infrastructure, improve access to care, with future plans emphasizing chronic disease support and public health education. The Health Department as part of its responsibilities undertook the following activities: Routine vaccination sessions in all 30 health facilities and outreach points, Training of 57 staff on vaccination, District responded to Mpox outreach with zero cases at this point in time, Community sensitization to topical health issues including malaria, HIV, TB, family planning, skilled delivery among others, Sample transportation of priority public health conditions, Distribution of 5 motor bikes to selected health facilities in the District, Conducted the calcination of girls aged 9-14 on the HPV vaccine. It is the wish of this government that every community have clean environment. I am happy to state that some of the Hon. Assembly Members have started organizing Sanitation Day in the electoral areas as support to the National Sanitation Day. This policy also seeks to make it obligatory for all individuals and corporate entities to be responsible for the cleaning of their immediate surroundings and enjoins all MMDAs to ensure full implementation within their various jurisdictions. He added. It is with this government that our nation has seen ongoing implementation of flagship programmes such as: Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) that Akontombra District has its share with the objective of modernizing farming through innovation, create jobs, ensure food security, and boost agro-industrialization. The government policy on Feed Ghana in the District is ongoing and under it, 72 communities were sensitized on the feed Ghana Programme. A total of 604 FBOs have been formed and enrolled into the web based tracker platform and Akontombra district is second in terms of number of FBOs formed and enrolled in the region. The Department of Agric has also undertaken the following activities; Scouting for fall army worms were done during the early stages of the maize. A total of 212Ha of maize farms were affected by the fall army worm. As a result of this, Adepa 24 litres and Warrior Super 96 bottles were received from the Regional Directorate and supplied to the affected farmers to spray their farms. Again, a total of 3,140 farmers were visited by the AEAs during the period under review. 14,645 animals which includes goats, sheep, cattle, poultry birds, and dogs were treated and vaccinated against various disease. The Department of Agric of SADA also supplied 9880 coconut seedlings to 254 farmers across the district. He informed. Addressing the August house, Honorable Joseph Appiah said that the Youth Employment Agency under the current government continue to work very hard to create more jobs in the country. The Youth Employment Agency has currently employed the youth in Ghana to train them to provide immediate, life-saving first aid and basic support during medical emergencies, bridging the gap until professional paramedics arrive. Under this, 20 youth from Akontombra district have been employed and I hope that more jobs opportunities will be created by the able President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. The interesting thing about this is that they are positioned within our communities (Electoral Areas) and attached to Assembly Members for rapid medical response. 11 youth from Akontombra district have also been absorbed into the prison service under the Youth Employment Agency. Second Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Fifth Assembly
On Thursday, 30th October 2025, the Second Ordinary meeting of the Second Session of the Fifth Assembly of the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly was held, where the District Chief Executive, Hon Joseph Appiah, spoke to the assembly about the completed, ongoing, and upcoming initiatives for the benefit of the residents of Sefwi Akontombra. The District Chief Executive affirmed the Assembly’s dedication to enhancing security, improving environmental sanitation, finalizing ongoing projects, fostering a supportive environment for small and medium enterprises, empowering the youth, generating more job opportunities, strengthening the Sub-Structures, and boosting revenue collection. “We can accomplish all of this through diligence, discipline, and determination. Distribution of Items to PWD Beneficiaries
On Thursday, 30th October 2025, the Social Welfare and Community Development Department of the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly made a distribution of various items to Persons With Disabilities (PWD) beneficiaries at the District Assembly Conference Hall. The items included 30 pieces of deep freezers, 10 fufu pounding machines, 10 sewing machines and cash support for over 30 persons. Speaking at the event, Hon Joseph Appiah (DCE) who presided over the distribution of the items stated that the Government is committed to taking care of Persons With Disabilities in Ghana which even resulted in the enforcement of a minimum 5% empowerment quota in Public and in Private Sectors and the provision of free tertiary education for PWDs. He revealed that it was through needs assessment report that the Assembly has taken a decision to support some PWD members with medical bills, provide economic and educational supports and also to purchase the various items to be distributed to the PWD beneficiaries in the District. He further announced that the Government led by President John Mahama has increased the quota giving to PWDs in respect to the DACF. Excerpts from the distribution
Presentation of Motorbikes to District Health Directorate
On the 29th October, 2025, on behalf of Ministry of Health, Hon Joseph Appiah (District Chief Executive), presented 6 motorbikes to the Sefwi Akontombra District Health Directorate. He urged the Directorate to ensure proper maintenance of the motorbikes and to be used for it intended purpose. The beneficiary health facilities are Edewuakrom CHPS, Ackaakrom CHPS, Kofikrom CHPS, Kojokrom CHPS, Wansampo CHPS and Akontombra District Hospital. The District Health Director, Mr Iddrisu Kunamsi who received the items was thankful to the Ministry of Health and by extension, the Government for the intervention as he indicated that this will greatly contribute in the health service delivery within the District. Stakeholder Engagement Meeting on National Sanitation Day – October 2025
On the 29th October, 2025, the District Assembly conducted a stakeholder engagement meeting regarding the National Sanitation Day. The purpose of the engagement was to discuss how residents can actively participate in the Sanitation Day exercise, which the Government has scheduled to occur nationwide on the first Saturday of each month. Among the various topics addressed were sanitation challenges in specific areas of the District, methods to enhance cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with sanitation standards. The meeting was attended by the District Chief Executive, Hon Joseph Appiah, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Christian Lartey, the Presiding Member, Hon Patrick Ahontonyon, Nananom, Assembly Members, Departmental Heads, Staff of the Assembly. representatives from National Security Institutions, the Local Council of Churches, the Muslims Council, GPRTU, Okada Association, Pragya Association, Market Executives, and the media. National Sanitation Day Clean Up Exercise – October 2025
As part of efforts to improve waste management and promote environmental cleanliness nationwide, the government through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has reintroduced the National Sanitation Day which will be observed on the first Saturday of every month across the country. It is against this backdrop that, today, October 4, 2025, the Sefwi Akontombra District participated in this maiden National Sanitation Day clean up exercise. Present at the event were Hon Pious Kwame Nkuah, Member of Parliament for the Sefwi Akontombra Constituency, Hon Joseph Appiah, District Executive, Heads of Departments, Traditional Leaders, National Security Institutions, Staff of various departments and agencies, Civil Society Organizations, and various youth groups. Addressing the media, Hon Joseph Appiah said this is a new beginning for Akontombra and that similar exercise will be organized across all major towns in the District to make the communities clean. Construction of 4-Unit Staff Flats at Akontombra – Ongoing
The Assembly is undertaking the construction of a 4-unit staff flat at Akontombra. The project aims to provide accommodation for government workers posted to the district, particularly teachers and administrative officers. It supports the Assembly’s broader goal of improving working and living conditions for public sector staff in rural areas.
